Molecular Diagnostics and Innovation - Pascal Bittel

Introduction

Welcome to the "Molecular Diagnostics and Innovation" group.  We are closely affiliated with the Division of Molecular Analytics within the diagnostics department of the Institute for Infectious Diseases, University of Bern. Molecular methods and advanced engineering, such as PCR and automation, enable rapid and accurate identification of pathogens. Our goal is to advance the field of molecular diagnostics, which plays an ever more important role in the detection, diagnosis and management of infectious diseases.

As the importance of molecular diagnostics continues to grow and  (sometimes) replace conventional microbiological technologies, especially in the field of syndromic diagnostics, our group is dedicated to developing, both in collaboration with the diagnostic industry and own LDTs (Laboratory developed test) innovative diagnostic tools and methodologies. We collaborate with groups and industry both globally and locally, ensuring our work is grounded in real-world clinical needs.

Focus

Our group is dedicated to advancing molecular diagnostics. We specialize in developing, refining and field-testing PCR tests, both independently and in collaboration with the diagnostic industry. Our work ranges from manual, niche molecular tests to providing the necessary framework for large-scale studies, utilizing high-automation robotics and advanced molecular assays. By partnering with industry, hospitals and research groups across Switzerland and globally, we gain invaluable access to clinical samples, early evaluator- and real world applied studies. Our final goal is to translate our work into clinical practice, contributing to creating innovative diagnostic tools and preventive measures to combat pathogen transmission.
