Biosafety refers to all principles, technologies and practices that are implemented to prevent unintentional exposure to biological agents or their accidental release whereas biosecurity encompasses all measures to prevent intentional release or misuse.
Biosafety and biosecurity are essential for safe and secure work practices but should dictate optimal and not maximal solutions. Some of these solutions are highly complex and certain elements are not necessarily sustainable and proportionate to the risk nor have they been validated by detailed studies. Therefore, the Biosafety Center conducts applied research on biosafety and biosecurity in order to gain more in-depth knowledge on evidence-based controls which could lead to the development of improved safety measures and procedures that are both efficient and cost-effective.
