A. Endimiani (Gram negatives)

Our research focuses on the genetic background of antibiotic resistant Gram-negative pathogens. We are specifically interested in the characterization of extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL), carbapenemase-producing, and colistin-resistant organisms isolated from humans, animals, and food products. Furthermore, we correlate the phenotypic and genetic background of resistance to the characteristics of patients (e.g., underlying diseases, risk factors, and use of antibiotics) and their clinical outcome under different antimicrobial treatments. Recently, we started testing novel antimicrobial peptides and bacteriophages against multidrug-resistant Gram-negatives.

We are also very interested in the development of new strategies and novel techniques (e.g., microarrays, real-time PCRs) to speed up the diagnosis of serious infections (e.g., bacteremia) due to multidrug-resistant Gram-negatives.

Neisseria gonorrhoeae is another organism that strongly attracts our interest. Phenotypic and molecular analyses are implemented to characterize the antibiotic resistance genes and the clonality of isolates. Moreover, rapid diagnostic tests to detect and characterize gonococcus and its resistance genes are under development; new therapeutic strategies are under evaluation as well.    

Other projects concerning Ureaplasma spp., Mycoplasma spp., Haemophilus spp., Aerococcus spp., and Burkholderia cepacia complex are also ongoing.

Prof. Andrea Endimiani’s group comprises two PostDoc, two PhD students, two laboratory technicians, one visiting PhD student, and one Study Nurse.
